Ms. V.Claire Breedlove, Counsul of the US Embassy in Colombo, Srilanka, met with the Minister of State, Controller of Immigration and Emigration Sh. Ilyas Hussain Ibrahim on the 3rd of February 2010. Deputy Controller Mr. Abdulla Waheed and Assistant Controller Mr. Ibrahim Ashraf were also present at the meeting which was held at the Immigration Head office. The main purpose of the meeting was to discuss about and collect information to be included in the US Trafficking in Person Report. The U.S. Department of State began monitoring trafficking in persons in 1994, when the issue began to be covered in the Department’s Annual Country Reports on Human Rights Practices. The report coverage has broadened over the years, and U.S. embassies worldwide now routinely monitor and report on cases of trafficking in men, women, and children for all forms of forced labor, including agriculture, domestic service, construction work, and sweatshops, as well as trafficking for commercial sexual exploitation. This Report, is intended to raise global awareness, to highlight efforts of the international community, and to encourage foreign governments to take effective actions to counter all forms of trafficking in persons.
To help compile this year’s report they discussed about the current situation in Maldives and the measures that are been taken, and the instant actions which needs to be implemented in order to control Human Trafficking and to make the general public aware of this global issue.
